Diabetes is a condition where the insulin production in the pancreas totally stops. In such a condition, the glucose in the blood cannot be absorbed by the cells in the body. The most common diabetes symptoms in this situation are frequent urination, excessive thirst and hunger and feeling tired. The treatment for this condition is taking insulin injections, making the required changes in the daily diet and taking oral medications. It is said that about 23 million people suffer from diabetes only in US. But, many of them would not even be aware that they are suffering from this disease. The reason for this is because the symptoms go unnoticed in most cases and are associated with weakness or some other reason.

Causes of Diabetes: Diabetes causes though unclear seems to have both hereditary and environmental issues involved. Research shows that most people who are affected by diabetes show a genetic factor. There are two types of diabetes, Type I and Type II. In Type I diabetes the body’s immune system becomes weak against infections. This is believed to happen because the virus and the other microorganisms to destroy the cells that are used to produce insulin in the pancreas. Type II diabetes is usually because of old age, family history of diabetes and obesity.

In type II diabetes, though insulin is produced by the pancreas, the cells become resistant to the insulin produced and hence it may not work as effectively as needed. The symptoms here build up slowly that the person affected by it would not even know of its existence. Type II diabetes may actually be diagnosed by the doctor when the patient is actually undergoing some other treatment. Diabetes risk is more in people who are obese, where diabetes runs in the family, people who have high density lipoprotein cholesterol, belong to a high risk ethnic race such as African-American, Hawaiian, and American etc.

The symptoms of diabetes either develop suddenly or over weeks. Urine test and blood tests are usually conducted to diagnose diabetes. The urine test done can also help in detecting the ketones and proteins in the urine by which one can make sure how well the kidneys are functioning. A person can also test the sugar levels himself using a Blood glucose meter. This is an instrument that should a part of the medical kit of every diabetic especially a person suffering from type I diabetes definitely. Diabetes can be controlled with proper diet and exercise by the individual. If care is not taken, then it can even lead to loss of eye sight and at times even death.
